Transform Your Flat Screen TV with LED Lights
Are you looking to enhance the ambiance of your TV area? Adding LED lighting behind your flat screen TV is a simple and quick project that can make a big difference. Whether you want to create a cozy atmosphere or improve your viewing experience, installing LED lighting is an affordable and easy way to elevate your TV setup.
Why Add LED Lights Behind Your TV
After we installed a faux boxwood panel wall behind our TV, we noticed that the area felt a bit dark and dull, especially at night. Although we love the boxwood wall for hiding unsightly holes and outlets, it didn’t provide adequate lighting. That’s when we decided to explore the option of adding LED lighting.
To our surprise, we discovered that LED light kits are not only inexpensive but also incredibly user-friendly. These kits offer a fantastic way to make your TV area more visually appealing, while also potentially reducing eye strain during prolonged TV viewing sessions.
What You’ll Need
Before we delve into the installation process, here’s a list of supplies you’ll need:
LED strip lights kit (ensure you choose the appropriate length for your TV size)
4 LED light strips
3 connector pieces
USB port connector
Adhesive clip hooks
Remote control
Cloth or towel
Note: If you’re a fan of smart lighting, Philips offers a Hue smart LED strip system. While it’s pricier than the standard LED light kits, it may be worth considering if you’re building a home theater or want the convenience of timed bias lighting.
How to Install LED Lights Behind Your TV
Adding LED lights to your TV is a relatively straightforward process, although the included instructions may be somewhat lacking. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the installation:
Step 1: Prepare the TV
Turn your TV around to expose its back. Use a cloth or towel to wipe away any dust, as a clean surface will ensure better adhesion for the LED strips.
Step 2: Separate the LED Strip
The LED lighting kit typically includes four LED strips, although it may appear as a single strip at first. Look closely at the strip, about a quarter of the way in, and you’ll notice a small break and a thickened section. This is where the strips are joined together.
Gently pull on both sides of the strip to separate it into four individual strips.
Step 3: Determine Your Lighting Design
Consider how you want to position the LED lights. The kit usually provides a booklet with different layout examples, but feel free to get creative. You can choose to illuminate all four sides of the TV, three sides, or even create a zigzag pattern.
Keep in mind that the size of your TV may influence the available options.
Step 4: Peel and Stick
Start in a spot where the first LED strip can reach the USB port. Make sure to connect the strip to the USB port and test it before proceeding.
Remove the backing from the first strip and carefully press it into place. We recommend positioning the strips about 1-2 inches from the edge of the TV. Also, ensure that all the arrows on the strips are facing the same direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise.
Attach the corner connecting piece and continue peeling and sticking the remaining strips until you’ve covered all four sides. In our case, we installed two strips horizontally and one strip vertically on each side.

Step 5: Turn Your TV Around
Finally, turn your TV back around to admire the results. Depending on your TV’s USB panel configuration, the lights may turn on when the TV is powered on or require separate activation.
Now you can enjoy the enhanced ambiance and the extra touch of style that LED lighting brings to your living room.
